Saxophonist,
composer and arranger, he began his musical studies playing
the acordeon and the piano by the age of seven, and when he
was ten, he already played at religious services, weddings,
parties and others. When he was twelve, he enjoyed the beautiful
sound of the saxophone and at that moment, he made his definitive
choice for this instrument.
In a little time, he began to play at several musical groups
of schools, churches and jazz and rock bandazilian rhytms,
specially bossa-nova, latin rhytms, soul, jazz and more
directly the gospel music, which is the main part of
his musical recordings and presentations.
He joined the Brazilian Navy when he was sixteen years old.
He graduated from the Navy Academy, reaching the rank of Lieutenant-commander,
always having special and cultural jobs and music related
activities. He was the leader of the midshipments musical
group and recreated the Navy Academy choir. He produced the
"Ecos de Villegagnon" album, which is a civic hymns
collection. He specialized in submarine acoustic and worked
as sound-officer of the brazilian submarine (Amazonas), whose
job was to analize the differents sounds of the undersea.
He retired from the Navy to dedicate himself entirely to the
musical world, trying to show his work everywhere in the world.
In order to enhance his knowledge, he traveled to several
countries: Sweden, France, Spain and Germany, and also to
Latin America, where he had contact with the "hottest"
rhytms in musical recordings and shows with musicians from
these countries.
From New Orleans, besides one of his saxophones, he brought
greater knowledge of jazz, blues and dixieland. From that
moment on he began his work (mainly instrumental) and always
with five components. He's worked with WILLIAM PEREIRA
pianist, JOSÉ SANTA ROSA bass player, WILSON PEREIRA drummer
and BILL HORNE trumpetist, who were his great enhancers and
had a lot of influence on his style.
Samuel plays the saxophones in his shows and recordings using
the alto, tenor and soprano and at the present time the composition
of the band is: FARLLEY JORGE (KEYBOARD), DUDU PASSOS
(GUITAR), ISRAEL CARVALHO (BASS) AND WALLACE CARDOSO (DRUMS).
They've made shows in several theaters, auditories, churches
and in live concerts for thousands of people. Recently,
they've played at the Townhall Theater of Niteroi, the BNDES
auditorium, SESI-RIO theater, UERJ theater, CT-UFRJ theater
and in many other places where the good music is appreciated.
His repertoire includes songs from his four CDs and other
new songs that will be part of Samuel's next phonographic
work, always aiming at good taste, quality and technique,
traveling along the blues, funk, soul and so many other musical
tendencies that characterize the good gospel music at the
present days.
His last professional experience took place after a succeeded
tour by the United States and Mexico, where he worked with
musicians of international prestige, such as the mexican pianist
ISMAEL ALDERETTE. He has in his curriculum productions and
participations in more than one hundred "Gospel"
albums in Brazil such as VENCEDORES POR CRISTO, CANTO DA TERRA,
CATEDRAL; and others in the United States: EBEN-EZER, VICTOR
HUGO FLORES, ERICK MONDRAGON among others; in Mexico: MARCOS
BARRIENTOS, GRUPO JES, AMISTAD CRISTIANA TORREON, RENATO VIZUET,
and also many shows in different places in Rio, São Paulo
and other brazilian cities.
His discography includes four albums with very different styles:
"ESSENCIAL" (SLCD001) - independent - is his first
solo work, and was produced in 1992 by FARLLEY JORGE (maestro
and pianist) and distributed by the "ARCA MUSICAL EVANGÉLICA"
as a long-play (LP), and it also had the participation of
PEDRO BROCONNOT (keyboards), JORGE GUEDES (piano) and author
of two songs; EDISON LUNE (bass). EDSON LENON (guitar) and
CACA COLÓN, (drums). It also had the participation of the
gospel singer JOSSANA GLESSA, vocalist in "BAIÃO DE DEUS".
This album shows inedit songs together with well-known compositions
of the current "gospel" music such as: "INFINITAMENTE
MAIS" by ASAPH BORBA, "DO JEITO QUE EU SOU"
by ED WISON and JORAN, and "QUIET PLACE" by RALPH
CARMICHAEL. That work was his presentation card and opened
space for the instrumental gospel music in Brazil. The original
songs were very important in the Brazilian gospel scenes:
"Pare e Pense" (TV). "Revelação", "Enfim
o Verão" and "Somente você", were the musical
themes of several radio and TV programs.
"INSPIRAÇÃO E FÉ" (SLCD003) - independent - is his
second work (1994), released in CD and cassette and distributed
by the "ESSENCIAL ARTE E CULTURA". It was produced
in Brazil, Mexico and USA, and it has a wider proposal because
it is a collection of the best traditional gospel with simphonics
and modern arrangements. Among them there are "HOW GREAT
THOU ART", "VIA DOLOROSA", "ESSÊNCIA DE
DEUS" (João Alexandre), "GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS"
and other songs which made this album a big international
sucess, awarding the MUSICAL OASIS title due the sensibility
of the diverse arrangers and the playing of the saxophone
by Samuel Lima (specialized critics opinion).
"ETERNAMENTE" (SLCD004) - independent - is his third
solo album. It is a collection of Christmas songs. For this
project he invited his friend and great musician FARLLEY JORGE,
who created an eclectic and modern work, always showing
a well dosed combination of multiple tendencies and rhytms,
trying to emphasize the technical performance with no damage
to the aesthetics. The repertoire begins with "SILENT
NIGHT", a famous and traditional Christmas song going
trough "GREENSLEEVES", "HARD! THE HERALD ANGELS
SING", "JINGLE BELLS", "WHITE CHRISTMAS"
and other famous musical themes of the Christmas season. This
album shows "BERCEUSE" as his last song, arranged
in a "BRAHMS LULLABY" theme rapsody style,
creating moments of diverse feelings the same way Christmas
spirit does, making the listeners enjoy emotions and delight
through the magic sound of the saxophone.
The fourth CD title is "LOUVORES INESQUECÍVEIS"
(SLCD002) which is a collection of classics from the latin
gospel and was produced in Los Angeles (USA) along two years
and it had the participation of musicians from several countries
such as CHILE, MEXICO, NICARAGUA, PANAMA and the US. They
are fifteen songs in the most diverse styles, played and sang,
made for the enjoyment of all Hispanic America.
The Fifth album is "Shalom"
, with the best of Comtemporary Christian Music.
In the repertoire we find
: "Shout to the Lord" ,"Motivo de mi Cancion"
,"Lamento de Israel", "Mover do Espirito"
and the Classical "Amazing Grace".
Samuel is already preparing his sixth CD, which is being awaited
anxiously. It will arrrive soon, bringing a lot of surprises,
but with the same essence that has characterized his previous
works. He sees his work as even more important because it
is a gift for blessing lives.
His message is the following:
"In spite of the eclectic style, in spite of the
"chic" style of the music, the message is only one
and true. The sound is nice to our ears and pleases our hearts,
and if the music flows as it does, I owe all this to the anointment
of Holy Spirit, to whom I transfer every honour and glory".
